Chiloe Island: Immersion in Chile

“The ultimate expedition camp for the outdoor type adventuresome spirit with a young heart.” Dr. Stephen Gunther, California

Chiloe Island : Futaleufu Adventure Trip Extension (3 Days/2 Nights)

Our wonderful Futaleufu Adventure Vacation add on to Chiloe Island is a terrific way to enjoy island life in Chile in conjunction with your trip to this part of Patagonia. This area of Chile is steeped in historical significance with a very rich and unique culture.

Offering you a wonderful experience enjoying the natural and cultural beauty of Chiloe Island, this excursion begins by bus from the town of Futaleufu to Ancud on the emerald isle of Chiloe Grande. On our first day, after a visit to a cafe in overlooking the bay and an historical discussion, we will depart into the Chilote countryside towards the rugged Pacific Coast of the island. An area of deserted beaches, quiet farmlands and coastal forests, the rarely visited west coast is a hidden jewel of natural beauty and wildlife. Our destination is the unique penguin colony of PuÒihuÌl, the only place in the world where Humbolt and Magallenic penguins nest side by side.

Our second day on Chiloe Island is spent initially exploring the bustling port city of Dalcahue, a picturesque fishing town and home of one of the 14 UNESCO World Heritage Site Churches on the island. Later, we travel into rural Chiloe where traditional Chilote culture thrives, with oxen pulling carts laden with firewood and life revolving around the rhythm of country life. Small fishing communities are nestled along the coast surrounded by thriving agricultural lands to create an ambiance of peace and tranquility. We then head to the coastal village of Tenaun, also the home of a UNESCO church. This special village has a unique location with stunning views over the outer islands of the Chiloe Archipelago and snow-capped mountains. If weather permits, we’ll join a local fisherman and take a boat trip to one of the nearby islands.

On our third day, we continue up the coastal road to the old world boats and lovely fishing community of Quemchi and then make our way back to Ancud for departure.
