I’ve been chasing rivers and adventure for as long as I can remember. My dad first took me down the South Fork of the American when I was six years old back in 1972, and something just clicked. A few years later I floated the Grand Canyon, and that was really it, I was hooked for life.
By the mid-80s I was guiding and kayaking full time, and that path has taken me all over the world ever since, Africa, Nepal, Siberia, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile, India and beyond. Always following great rivers, big mountains, and the kind of places that make you feel small in the best possible way.
In 1992 we started Bio Bio Expeditions with a pretty simple idea, that time spent in wild places, doing real journeys with good people, can actually change you. We started on the Bio Bio River in Chile, and when that river was eventually dammed, we followed the current south and built a home on the Futaleufú, where I spent the next 25 years helping create one of the great riverside adventure camps in the world.
Today, Bio Bio runs trips all over, from Patagonia to Kilimanjaro, the Zambezi to Machu Picchu, Bhutan, the Galápagos, and plenty of classic rivers closer to home like the Rogue, Main Salmon, and Tatshenshini. Different places, same idea: real adventures, in real wild places, shared with great people.
What people remember most isn’t just the rivers or the scenery, it’s the feeling. The laughter around camp, the quiet moments on the water, and the connections that happen when you’re a long way from normal life. That sense of being completely present, and somehow both challenged and completely at ease at the same time.
At the core of it all is our team. From Truckee to our guides around the world, we’ve built a group of people who really live this life. They bring experience, care, and a genuine love for sharing these places with others. When you travel with us, you’re not just signing up for a trip, you’re stepping into something bigger than that.
At the end of the day, we’re just trying to do one thing well: create journeys that matter. The kind you don’t forget.
Warm regards,
Marc Goddard
