Festo Mtui

Festo was born into the Chagga tribe and raised in a small village at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, a place where the mountain is not just a landmark, but a way of life. From an early age, he understood both the beauty and the challenge of the mountain that would later shape his career.

He began his journey on Kilimanjaro as a porter in his young adulthood, carrying loads up the mountain while learning the terrain, the weather, and the rhythm of a successful climb. Through dedication, hard work, and a deep respect for the mountain, Festo steadily worked his way up to become a lead guide and has lead trips for Bio Bio for more than 25 years!

Over the course of his career, Festo has successfully guided well over 150 full ascents of Mount Kilimanjaro, each one unique, each one meaningful. What sets him apart is not just his experience, but his genuine passion for helping people achieve what is often a lifelong dream. He takes great pride in seeing his guests push beyond their limits and stand on the summit, knowing he played a part in making that moment possible.

As a lead guide, Festo is responsible for every aspect of the trek—from managing the porter team to ensuring each guest is safe, supported, and prepared. He is exceptionally detail-oriented and highly trained in recognizing the early signs and symptoms of altitude sickness, allowing him to make thoughtful decisions that prioritize both safety and success.

Festo’s calm demeanor, steady leadership, and deep knowledge of the mountain create an environment where guests feel confident and cared for. He is fluent in English and Kiswahili, as well as his native Chagga language, allowing him to connect easily with both his team and international travelers.
