Mandirisi Ngoma (Hippo)

My name is Mandirisi Ngoma—though most people know me as “Hippo.” I was born in Hwange on March 29, 1966, where I grew up and completed my early education. In 1992, I made my way to Victoria Falls to pursue training as a whitewater rafting guide, beginning what would become a lifelong career on the river.

From 1992 through 2018, I worked extensively as a rafting guide on the Zambezi, gaining decades of hands-on experience navigating one of the world’s most powerful and iconic rivers. Even today, I remain actively involved, leading multi-day rafting trips and sharing my deep knowledge of the river, its rhythms, and its ever-changing character.

Over the years, I have also become known for my role as a lead guide on Bio-Bio Worldwide Expedition safari trips, where I bring together adventure, culture, and connection. Whether guiding guests downriver, through the bush, or around Victoria Falls itself, I take great pride in creating meaningful and memorable experiences.

What truly sets me apart is my storytelling. I don’t just guide trips—I bring them to life. With decades of experience living and working in the Victoria Falls region, I share stories rich with local history, wildlife encounters, river lore, and personal adventures. My guests often say that the stories are just as unforgettable as the landscapes themselves.

In addition to rafting and safaris, I also lead guided tours of Victoria Falls, as well as transfers and custom excursions throughout the region. For me, guiding is not just a profession—it’s a passion rooted in sharing the beauty, culture, and spirit of this incredible place with people from around the world. I also speak fluent English and 12 other African Languages!
