Itinerary

What to expect

Days 1–2: Arrival in Bhutan & Exploring Thimphu

Arrive in the beautiful Paro Valley before transferring to Bhutan’s charming capital, Thimphu (7,600 ft).  Along the way, visit the historic Tachog Iron Bridge, built in the 15th century by the renowned Tibetan saint Thangtong Gyalpo, and admire the nearby Tachog Monastery.  In Thimphu, visit the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, with sweeping views over the valley.

The following day enjoy a scenic hike through oak forests to Tango Monastery, one of Bhutan’s most important centers of Buddhist learning. After lunch, explore the National Institute for Zorig Chusum (Arts & Crafts School) before visiting the Motithang Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s unique national animal.

Days 3–4: Punakha Valley & Whitewater Adventure

Travel across the spectacular Dochula Pass (10,200 ft), where—on clear days—the snow-covered Bhutan Himalaya stretch across the horizon. Visit the famous 108 Memorial Chortens before descending into the warm Punakha Valley.

Walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the famous Fertility Temple dedicated to the legendary “Divine Madman,” then enjoy a scenic float on the Mo Chhu River. Visit the beautiful Sangchen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery and the hilltop village of Nobgang, home to the families of Bhutan’s Queens, where you’ll enjoy a traditional Bhutanese dinner.

The following day, experience one of Bhutan’s most exciting adventures with a more exhilarating whitewater rafting trip on the Pho Chhu River. Finish with a picnic overlooking the spectacular Punakha Dzong, before touring one of Bhutan’s most impressive fortresses, dramatically situated at the confluence of the Mother and Father Rivers.

Days 5–8: The Heart of Bhutan – Trongsa & Bumthang

Journey into central Bhutan through the stunning Phobjikha Valley, winter home of the endangered Black-necked Crane. Enjoy the colorful Black-necked Crane Festival, featuring traditional mask dances, music, and cultural performances before continuing to historic Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of Bhutan’s royal family.

The following day visit the Ta Dzong Museum before crossing Yotong La Pass (11,140 ft) into beautiful Bumthang. Hike to the spectacular Tharpaling Monastery (12,400 ft) before descending into the valley.

Spend the next two days exploring Bhutan’s spiritual heart. Hike through forests and traditional villages, visit ancient monasteries including Thangbi Lhakhang, Nga Lhakhang, Kenchosum Lhakhang, and Tamzhing Lhakhang, enjoy lunch at a local farmhouse, try Bhutan’s national sport of archery, visit the Red Panda Brewery, and explore the sacred Burning Lake (Mebar Tsho) and Pema Choling Nunnery.

Days 9–11: Paro & The Legendary Tiger’s Nest

Fly back to Paro and visit Bhutan’s fascinating National Museum, housed inside the historic Ta Dzong watchtower, before enjoying free time to stroll through Paro’s charming streets.

The next day drive to Chele La Pass, Bhutan’s highest motorable pass, where breathtaking Himalayan views await. Hike down to the spectacular Kila Nunnery, dramatically perched on the cliffs, before visiting Dzongdrakha Monastery.

Your Bhutan adventure culminates with the unforgettable hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), Bhutan’s most iconic landmark. Clinging impossibly to a cliff 2,700 feet above the valley floor, Tiger’s Nest is one of the most inspiring pilgrimage sites in the Himalaya. Enjoy lunch overlooking the monastery before descending.

Day 12: Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward flight via Bangkok, bringing your unforgettable journey through the Kingdom of Bhutan to a close.
