Itinerary

What to expect

Days 1–3: Santiago → Puerto Varas → Chaitén → Futaleufú Region

Arrive in Santiago and connect to Puerto Montt before transferring to Puerto Varas, a scenic lakeside town beneath Volcano Osorno. After a welcome dinner, fly to Chaitén and continue by road into Patagonia, passing glaciers and alpine lakes en route to the Futaleufú River. Spend three nights at the lakeside Lonconao Cottages, enjoying Class IV rafting on the Futaleufú, kayaking or rafting on the Espolón River, and optional hiking, fishing, and swimming. Evenings feature chef-prepared meals and relaxing lodge accommodations overlooking Lago Lonconao.

Days 4–6: Futaleufú Canyon → Río Azul → Peuma Lodge

Continue rafting the upper Futaleufú Canyon through exhilarating Class IV rapids, with optional Class V sections for advanced paddlers. Then bike through remote Patagonian farmland and forest to the Río Azul for inflatable kayaking before transferring to Peuma Lodge for a three-night stay. Activities include rafting Class III–IV rapids, exploring the Río Blanco slot canyon via hiking, climbing, and swimming, and enjoying the lodge’s saunas, hot tubs, and mountain views.

Days 7–9: Lago Obsession → Lower Futaleufú → Yelcho → Santiago

Hike through old-growth forest and waterfalls to the dramatic Lago Obsession, with easier hiking or lodge relaxation options available. On the final river day, raft the lower Futaleufú through continuous Class IV rapids with optional Class V runs before transferring to Yelcho Lodge on Lago Yelcho for a farewell dinner. The next morning, drive to the airport for flights to Puerto Montt and onward to Santiago.

Ideally situated a few minutes’ walk from downtown Puerto Varas, it designed so that all rooms offer dramatic views of Lago Llanquihue and the snow-capped Osorno Volcano, which towers 8,600 vertical feet above the lake’s eastern shore. Handcrafted from local wood and stone, the hotel maintains a surprisingly intimate atmosphere.

Located on 6,000 wild acres, the property’s spacious, heated cottages sit just a short distance from beautiful Lago Lonconao. Each thoughtfully designed 800-square-foot luxury cottage features two bedrooms, a central living area, and full-wall windows that bring the outdoors in. From every room and private deck, guests enjoy sweeping views of the lake and the snow-capped peaks rising beyond.

Set on 800 wild acres amid old-growth hardwood forest, the handcrafted Peuma Eco Lodge features nine heated hexagonal cabins, each with a private bath. A central living and dining area with a fireplace opens onto a deck with a hot tub, offering dramatic views of towering, snow-capped mountains in every direction. The Lago Obsession trailhead is just a five-minute walk away.”

The Yelcho Lodge is a 1,000-acre property located on the shore of the stunning Lago Yelcho, with views of soaring, glacier-capped mountains rising 5,000 feet above the water. Sea kayaking is available, as well as a nearby glacier hike.

Located an hour and a half closer to Chaitén Airport than the Futaleufú Valley, staying here allows for a more relaxed final morning. Instead of a 5:30 AM departure, guests can wake at 7:00 AM and still comfortably catch the 9:00 AM flight to Puerto Montt.”
