About this trip

Tatshenshini River Expedition

The Tatshenshini–Alsek Expedition is a journey straight into the Ice Age. This legendary river cuts through the world’s largest non-polar ice cap, past booming, calving glaciers and beneath towering peaks in one of the largest protected wilderness areas on Earth, a 25-million-acre UNESCO World Heritage Site. Named the #1 river trip in the world by National Geographic, it’s often called one of the last truly wild river systems left on the planet.

The trip begins in Canada on the intimate, forest-lined Tatshenshini, then grows bigger and wilder every day as it joins the mighty Alsek. Soon you’re floating between the Alsek and St. Elias ranges, beneath 15,325-foot Mount Fairweather, drifting past massive glaciers, icebergs, and into Alaska’s remote Dry Bay and the Gulf of Alaska. Along the way, bears, moose, mountain goats, wolves, salmon, and bald eagles share the landscape.

This is a place where you can watch the Earth changing in real time. Hear glaciers crack, feel the power of ice and water, and still enjoy the quieter moments: wildflower hikes, endless daylight, mirror-smooth currents, campfires, moonlit icebergs, and cocktails chilled with 10,000-year-old ice.

Our Tatshenshini–Alsek trips combine epic wilderness with exceptional comfort, creative meals, and one of the most experienced and friendly guide teams anywhere. No expedition background required just a sense of adventure and a desire to unplug completely.

Please Note: Our Tatshenshini River trips are run by Momentum Alaska; A partnership between Pete Wallstrom, the owner of Momentum River Expeditions, and guide Erik Meldrum.

Itinerary

What to expect

Days 1–2: Gateway to the Ice Age

Welcome to the charming fjord town of Haines, Alaska where you’ll check into the historic Halsingland Hotel, and kick things off with a welcome dinner and trip orientation. The next morning, you drive the stunning Chilkat River Valley, cross into Canada, and launch onto the legendary Tatshenshini River. After rigging boats and lunch, the adventure begins immediately with the Tatshenshini Gorge, the biggest whitewater of the trip, before settling into your first riverside camp near Silver Creek for campfire dinner and your first night under the stars.

Days 3–4: Layover Life & Alpine Views

You ease into river rhythm with mellow floating and your first layover camp at Sediments Creek. With two nights in one stunning spot, you can hike into high alpine terrain for jaw-dropping canyon views and possible mountain goat sightings or simply relax on the riverbank, soak it all in, and enjoy life off the clock.

Days 5–6: A Bigger River, A Bigger World

The Tatshenshini grows wider and more powerful as you weave through braided channels beneath increasingly dramatic peaks. Nights are spent at classic camps like Alkai, Henshi, and Towagh Creek, where the sense of scale and remoteness really begins to sink in.

Day 7: The Great Confluence

Today is one of the most unforgettable days of the journey. The river funnels through the lush, jungle-like S-Turns, then suddenly explodes into the massive, glacier-wrapped amphitheater where the Tatshenshini meets the Alsek. Few places on Earth feel this humbling. You camp in the heart of it all near Melt Creek, surrounded by ice, peaks, and silence.

Days 8–9: Glaciers Everywhere

Now on the mighty Alsek River, you float beneath towering mountains with glaciers in every direction. You pull in at Walker Glacier for up-close ice exploration, then drift past the immense Novatak Glacier to camp on the Spit, where the river meets Alsek Lake. At night, you fall asleep to the thunderous sound of glaciers calving into the lake.

Days 10–11: Icebergs & Icons

Get ready to navigate into Alsek Lake and set up a two-night layover at Gateway Knob, one of the most spectacular campsites on the planet. From here, you explore the shoreline, paddle among icebergs, and if conditions align, catch views of 15,325-foot Mount Fairweather rising above the ice. This is pure expedition magic.

Day 12: Back to Civilization

After an early breakfast, you float past icebergs one last time and ride the current to Dry Bay. From here, a scenic bush flight carries you to Yakutat, with onward connections to Juneau, your head full of glaciers, wilderness, and one truly magnificent river journey.

Lodging

Where you'll stay

u wake up to the sound of a fish jumping in the river. A guide taps your tent – she has a mug of fresh coffee for you. Your toes squeak through the chilly sand of the beach on your way to the river’s edge. Set your coffee on a rock and splash fresh water on your face. You’re awake. You’re here. Who knows what day it is…

Your river guides are joking with each other, sipping hot beverages, cracking eggs and slicing strawberries. The sky is brilliant – a color you haven’t seen for a long time. The canyon walls are majestic but familiar: they’ve been your home for the last two days. An eagle silently soars overhead, waking up with the rising sunlight. You’re awake. You’re here. Who knows what day it is…

At the time you’d normally be cracking open your laptop and checking email, you’re headed down the slope of a wave hearing the rush of the wilderness all around you. Hoots and hollers slide up the river walls from the boats below. You dig your paddle into the water and your body awakens, not because you’re exercising, but because it has to. You have a boat to get down the river.

Your arms are tired and your hair is a mess. You’re awake. You’re here. Who knows what day it is…

There is something very unique about a river trip – besides leaving your phone and the internet behind – there is a unique feeling to being led through nature by nature itself. The river supplies the direction, the views, the action, and the speed and rhythm of your days,

For most of our trips you do not need to be an experienced adventurer, an athlete, or even to have ever touched a paddle or spent a night under the stars. Our trips are designed for those who like or want to be introduced to the outdoors and our goal is to make these places we love accessible to everyone.

Guests are surprised by the quality of the food, the overall comfort, and the many intangibles that characterize extended time on the river. We are extremely proud of our comfortable camping in wilderness places. The camping is deluxe, the food is excellent and served in a dining room where the sky is the ceiling, and you can leave everything to us – the planning, the cooking, the cleaning, and even the gear. Just bring your toothbrush and your sense of adventure
