About this trip

Kilimanjaro & Safari Wildlife Adventure

Start off your African adventure with a seven day ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro via Bio Bio Expeditions’ Modified Shira Route, a spectacular blend of the Shira and Machame routes that offers incredible scenery, fewer crowds, and excellent acclimatization. We take the time to let you experience the mountain’s changing landscapes while giving you the best chance to reach Uhuru Peak at 19,324 feet. Whether it’s the summit itself or a personal milestone, everyone walks away with a true sense of accomplishment.

After the climb, the adventure shifts to safari mode. Celebrate your achievement in Tarangire National Park, famous for its baobab forests and elephant herds, then explore the legendary Ngorongoro Crater, a wildlife-packed volcanic caldera. With beautiful, high end safari lodges along the way, this journey perfectly balances challenge, comfort, and the wild magic of Africa.

Itinerary

What to expect

Days 1–2: Welcome to Tanzania

Touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport and be greeted by the Bio Bio Expeditions team before heading to the beautiful Arusha Serena Hotel. Day two is all about settling into Africa, rest by the lake, explore the colorful town of Arusha, or jump into your first wildlife encounter with an optional safari in nearby Arusha National Park, where giraffes, buffalo, and monkeys roam beneath views of Kilimanjaro.

Days 3–5: Onto the Mountain

With packs ready, you leave town and begin your Modified Shira Route ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. You climb steadily through shrub forest and onto the wide-open Shira Plateau, soaking in huge views and easing into the altitude. Days are filled with scenic hiking, relaxed pacing, and nights spent in comfortable camps with hot meals, warm drinks, and mountain sunsets.

Days 6–7: High Country & Acclimatization

As the mountain grows bigger, so does the adventure. You hike past Lava Tower, traverse dramatic high-alpine terrain, scramble up the famous Barranco Wall, and settle into camps beneath hanging glaciers. These days are designed to help your body adapt while giving you front-row seats to Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular landscapes.

Days 8–9: Summit Push & Celebration

Summit night is the moment you’ve been waiting for. You climb by headlamp under a sky full of stars, step onto the crater rim at sunrise, and continue to Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft) the highest point in Africa. After soaking in the views, you descend through changing ecosystems back to the rainforest, returning to Arusha for hot showers, great food, and a well-earned celebration.

Days 10–11: Safari in Tarangire

Time to relax in comfort! You’ll head west to Tarangire National Park, famous for its massive elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and big predators. Catch game drives at dawn and dusk, enjoy a midday siesta, and sunset walks round out your classic safari experience.

Days 12–13: Ngorongoro Crater Magic

Next, travel through Maasai country to the edge of the legendary Ngorongoro Crater. Descend into the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera for a full day of wildlife viewing among lions, rhinos, zebras, flamingos, and more, one of the densest concentrations of animals anywhere in Africa.

Day 14: Farewell or Island Escape

Return to Arusha in time to catch your international flight or continue on to Zanzibar for a well deserved beach finale.
