Galapagos Islands Cruise: A Small-Yacht Adventure

Explore the Galapagos Islands Cruise Experience with Bio Bio Expeditions

Galapagos Islands Small Yacht Cruise

There are trips you remember for the scenery. Others for the people. And then there are journeys like the Galapagos... where every hour seems to inspire a new understanding of the natural world.

Our recent Galapagos Islands cruise reminded us why this destination sits at the very top of so many travelers’ bucket lists. Over ten unforgettable days on our unique small-yacht cruise, our group explored volcanic landscapes, snorkeled beside playful sea lions and penguins, watched sharks glide beneath moonlight, and woke each morning to an entirely different island revealing itself outside our cabin windows.

But what lingered long after the trip ended wasn’t only the wildlife. It was the feeling of being part of something rare, deeply humbling, and unexpectedly tight-knit.

How 32 Strangers Became a Team (Before Ever Setting Sail)

Each of our expeditions attracts a diverse crowd of adventurers. But we knew this specific group was special before we even set foot on the boat. We were joined by 32 Continuing Medical Education (CME) physicians, nurses, and nurse practitioners, alongside their spouses, friends, and three solo women travellers. Ranging in age from 37 to 75, our community for the week hailed from California, Texas, Wyoming, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Florida, Tennessee, Canada, and Australia.

Our bonding experience started early—and unexpectedly—during our pre-cruise city tour in Quito. One of our guests accidentally became separated from the group and had no phone. Instead of panicking, our doctors and nurses immediately tapped into their natural problem-solving instincts, organizing a highly coordinated, systematic search party.

While the missing traveller was safely located back at the hotel a few hours later, that shared challenge cemented an immediate bond among us. By the time we finally boarded the yacht, we weren't a collection of strangers standing on a deck; we were a synchronized team ready for adventure.

The Small-Yacht Advantage (Or, Why Size Matters!)

Galapagos CME adventure

The Galapagos are not a place you simply “visit.” They’re something you experience slowly, quietly, and with an ever-expanding sense of awe.

You can see these islands on a big ship... but on a yacht, you actually feel them. Traveling as a nimble, low-impact group allowed us to step away from the crowds. We could easily tuck into remote landing sites where the only other residents were marine iguanas.

Our comprehensive route took us through the archipelago’s most iconic islands and islets:

  • Isabela & Fernandina
  • Santiago & Santa Cruz
  • North Seymour & Mosquera Islet
  • South Plaza & Santa Fe
  • Isla Lobos

Every day brought four separate excursions. We dove into snorkeling adventures, tackled lava walks, and took panga rides through mysterious mangroves and caves. Our expert Galapagos Naturalist Guides, Juan Carlos, Daniel, and Emil—complemented by our incredible Bio Bio representative, Renee—ensured we didn't miss a single detail.

The Rhythm of the Days: Wake before sunrise. Step onto the deck with coffee in hand. Watch volcanic silhouettes emerge from the mist. Scan the water for dolphins or rays. Then, head ashore into landscapes that feel completely untouched by time. No two mornings were ever the same.

Wildlife Encounters That Feel Almost Unreal

Galapagos Islands Small Yacht Cruise

You can read about the wildlife of the Galapagos for years and still not be prepared for how close everything feels.

You can read about the wildlife of the Galapagos for years and still not be prepared for how close everything feels. The animals here don’t fear humans as wildlife does elsewhere; there’s no frantic scattering into the bush. Blue-footed boobies nest calmly beside walking trails. Marine iguanas pile together on black lava rocks, entirely unfazed by onlookers. Frigate birds circle overhead while sea lions nap beside docks and beaches.

The Moments That Silenced the Boat:

  • The First Orca Sighting: One afternoon, an excited shout echoed from the deck – orcas! Instantly, everyone rushed outside. Conversations stopped. Cameras lowered. The entire group stood together in a visceral, breathless silence, watching the magnificent animals surface beside the yacht.
  • Underwater Playmates: During our daily snorkels, Galapagos penguins darted through the water, weaving effortlessly around our group. Curious sea lions nudged our fins, taunting us like underwater puppies inviting us to a game of hide-and-seek.
  • Midnight Visitors: At night, several travellers stood mesmerized at the railing as 5-to-8-foot Galapagos sharks circled beneath the moonlit boat.

Whenever marine wildlife appeared, a call would go out through the boat to make sure no one missed the sighting. That shared excitement deepened the connections we had forged at the start of the trip.

These aren’t zoo encounters; they feel wild, spontaneous, and profoundly authentic.

From Salsa Lessons to a Bollywood Extravaganza

That growing camaraderie turned our yacht's dining room into a nightly hub of laughter and storytelling. One evening even evolved into a full-blown, impromptu dance party.

Our guests Ashish, Shailee, Avinash, and Lavanya took center stage, leading the entire group in a Bollywood dance session (with the men absolutely rocking the shoulder shimmy). This followed a lively salsa class hosted by Darlene, where the Ecuadorian crew joined in and playfully put our gringo hips to shame!

The result? A yacht full of people laughing until late into the evening while anchored beside one of the most extraordinary island chains on Earth.

Adventure, Comfort, and Wilderness Medicine CME

Galapagos CME

One of the unique aspects of many of our adventures is seamlessly integrating professional enrichment into world-class travel.

Led by renowned Wilderness Medicine CME instructor Will Smith, our medical professionals engaged in educational discussions surrounded by one of the most biologically important ecosystems on the planet. Rather than sitting in a sterile hotel conference room, they collaborated with colleagues and discussed real-world medicine while earning valuable credits—before immediately heading out to hike lava fields or kayak past mangroves.

It changes the entire energy of professional travel. Our guests returned home not only with CME credits, but with stories they’ll be telling for years.

Why Travel to the Galapagos with Bio Bio Expeditions?

Bio Bio Expeditions - Galapagos Islands Cruise- A Small-Yacht Adventure

Modern travel often feels rushed—airports, checklists, crowds, and constant motion. The Galapagos does the opposite.
It forces you to pay attention.
Here, you can’t help but slow down and notice the texture of volcanic lava fields, the strange prehistoric elegance of marine iguanas, and the vibrant colour shifts at sunrise. Even the rougher ocean nights became a fond, shared memory; some guests described being rocked gently to sleep, while others held onto bunks, laughing through the wild ride.
We believe transformative travel comes from the combination of expert planning, exceptional guides, small-group camaraderie, and immersive experiences.

We believe transformative travel comes from the combination of expert planning, exceptional guides, small-group camaraderie, and immersive experiences that connect people more deeply to the world around them.

Our Galapagos small yacht cruises are designed for curious, adventurous travellers who value wildlife, culture, and meaningful connection. Long after returning home, our group was still messaging each other, sharing photos, and reliving favourite memories.

That tight-knit bond says everything.
